RETROSPEC® Omega Bikes: Drawing Inspiration from His Grandfather's Passion for the Outdoors
Ely Khakshouri founded RETROSPEC® in 2009 as a sophomore at USC. Despite the high cost of fixies, which had become very popular for their handmade appearance, in the early 2000s, many fixies were put together using salvaged, colorful parts to achieve a unique style.
Ely aimed to replicate that aesthetic in an affordable way, especially for college students. While juggling a full-time school schedule, Ely independently located manufacturers and materials.
RETROSPEC® was established with the mission of creating products that inspire a love for the outdoors, echoing the exhilarating experiences Ely shared with his grandfather in his childhood. The brand continues to cater to nature enthusiasts with reasonably priced, high-quality gear for every season. Over the past decade, RETROSPEC® has expanded significantly to cater to a wide range of consumers, igniting their passion for the outdoors and fostering their appreciation for nature.
Originating in DTLA's urban fixed-gear cycling community, RETROSPEC® has spent a decade pushing boundaries, creating groundbreaking designs, and mastering the evolving cycling environment.
RETROSPEC® Omega features a modern design that pays tribute to a decade of thoughtful creations by RETROSPEC® for all-season adventuring. The bike's sleek lines are reminiscent of 20th-century Bauhaus design, embodying the simplicity of single-speed riding in a contemporary way.
“In 2009, our Alpha fixed-gear/single-speed bike marked RETROSPEC®'s debut on the streets of Los Angeles,” noted Ely Khakshouri, founder and CEO. “The raw minimalism and European flair of our fixed-gear pioneer established RETROSPEC®'s reputation for quality, innovative designs, and a commitment to making nature accessible over the past decade.”
“The design aims to be simple, enjoyable, and practical,” said Jackman. “Omega embodies our brand's essence, focusing on color and color theory rather than intricate decals.”
Designer Justin Jackman drew inspiration from clean lines influenced by 20th-century Bauhaus aesthetics in crafting RETROSPEC® Omega. A contemporary color palette bridges RETROSPEC®'s past with its future, reflecting a recent visual rebrand overseen by Jackman. He also mentioned that RETROSPEC®'s latest brand identity explores similar ideas concerning color, traditional Swiss design elements, and inclusivity.
RETROSPEC® Omega is constructed for durability using high-tensile strength steel, ensuring another decade of cycling. The bike includes RETROSPEC®'s signature flip-flop hub (for fixed or single-speed riding), comfortable riser handlebars, powerful dual brakes, and specially designed components such as VP freestyle pedals, KMC ⅛” chain, 25.4mm riser handlebars, front and rear Promax brakes, 30mm Deep V rims, and more.
